IN the twelve towers her early morning toilet is completed.
From the tower “of looking for fairies” she gazes towards the Emperor's (apartments).
On the palace gate the locks bite on their golden beasts and the linked rings are cold.
The water drips from the copper dragon.
When will the water clock bring in the day?
Her cloudy hair combed, she looks at the mirror,
She changes her silk clothes, puts on more perfume.
(At last) from a distance she spies on the front hall of the emperor and sees the curtains drawn.
The attendants in their uniforms are making the imperial bed.
In twelve chambers the ladies, decked for the day, Peer afar for their lord from their Fairy-View Lodge; The golden toad guards the lock on the door-chain, And the bronze-dragon water-clock drips through the morning— Till one of them, tilting a mirror, combs her cloud of hair And chooses new scent and a change of silk raiment; For she sees, between screen-panels, deep in the palace, Eunuchs in court-dress preparing a bed. Where the screen, withdrawn, revealed the imperial hall, The court maids doing the Royal Bed appeared in view. |

十二楼中尽（ことごと）く暁妝（ぎょうしょう） 望仙（ばうせん）楼上 君王を望む 鎖（さ）は金獣（きんじゅう）を銜（ふく）んで連環冷（ひや）やかに 水は銅竜（どうりょう）に滴（したた）って昼漏（ちゅうろう）長し 雲髻（うんけい） 梳（そ）を罷（や）めて 還（また）鏡に対し 羅衣（らい） 換（か）えんと欲して 更に香（こう）を添（そ）う 遥（はる）かに正殿（せいでん） 簾（れん）開く処を窺（うかが）えば 袍袴（ほうこ）の宮人 御床（ぎょしょう）を掃（はら）う 十二楼中尽（ことごと）く暁妝（ぎょうしょう） 望仙（ばうせん）楼上 君王を望む 鎖（さ）は金獣（きんじゅう）を銜（ふく）んで連環冷（ひや）やかに 水は銅竜（どうりょう）に滴（したた）って昼漏（ちゅうろう）長し 雲髻（うんけい） 梳（そ）を罷（や）めて 還（また）鏡に対し 羅衣（らい） 換（か）えんと欲して 更に香（こう）を添（そ）う 遥（はる）かに正殿（せいでん） 簾（れん）開く処を窺（うかが）えば 袍袴（ほうこ）の宮人 御床（ぎょしょう）を掃（はら）う 宮中の十二にものぼる高楼の中では、すべての宮女が朝化粧して、望仙楼上から、天子のお召しを待ち望んでいる。 宮殿の錠前は、黄金の獣の飾りが施され、その連なり続く幾つものくさりの輪に冷たく閉ざされたままであり、銅製の竜の頭の形をした水時計に、水はゆっくりとしたたり落ちて、昼の時間の移ろいは、もどかしいほどにゆったりと長く感じられる。 豊かに美しい髪の毛を、くしけずることを途中でやめたかと思うと、また、鏡に向かってくしけずり、薄絹の着物を着換えようとしては、また、香をたき添える。そして遠く天子の御座所に、わずかにすだれの開くあたりをうかがい見れば、夜の御殿に侍る衣服を身につけた宮女が一人、今宵のつとめを果たすべ天子の寝所をいそいそと整えているのだった。 十二（じゅうに）楼中（ろうちゅう）尽く（ことごと）曉（ぎょう）妝（しょう） 望仙（ぼうせん）楼上（ろうじょう） 君王（くんのう）を望（のぞ）む 鎖（き）は金獣（きんじゅう）を銜（ふく）みて 連環（れんかん）冷（ひやや）かに 水（みづ）は銅竜（どうりゅう）に滴（したた）りて 昼（ちゅう）漏（ろう）長（なが）し 雲髻（うんけい） 梳（くしけづ）るを罷（や）めて 還（ま）た鏡（かがみ）に対（たい）し 羅衣（らい） 換（か）へんと欲（ほっ）して 更（さら）に香（こう）を添（そ）ふ 遥（はる）かに正殿（せいでん）に簾（れん）の開（ひら）く処（ところ）を窺（うかが）へば 袍袴（ほうこ）の宮人（きゅうじん） 御牀（ぎょうしょう）を掃（はら）ふ 十二楼中尽く曉妝 望仙楼上 君王を望む 鎖は金獣を銜みて 連環冷かに 水は銅竜に滴りて 昼漏長し 雲髻 梳るを罷めて 還た鏡に対し 羅衣 換へんと欲して 更に香を添ふ 遥かに正殿に簾の開く処を窺へば 袍袴の宮人 御牀を掃ふ |
