Girl in the moon, are you sorry you stole the herb of immortality,
And night after night have to watch over the $(distant)$, emerald sea and the $(boundless)$ jeweled sky?
The lamp glows deep in the mica screen. The long river slowly descends, the morning star drowns. Is Ch'ang O sorry that she stole the magic herb, Between the blue sky and the emerald sea, thinking night after night? THE shadows of the candles fall deep on the screens of mother-of-pearl; The Milky Way sinks and the stars fade towards the morning. Do you repent as you should, Ch‘ang O, for stealing the drug of immortality As you look down night after night on the green seas and blue skies? Now that a candle-shadow stands on the screen of carven marble And the River of Heaven slants and the morning stars are low, Are you sorry for having stolen the potion that has set you Over purple seas and blue skies, to brood through the long nights? |
