An empty rumour, that second world beyond the seas.
Other lives we cannot divine, this life is finished.
In vain she hears the Tiger Guards sound the night rattle,
Never again shall the Cock Man come to report the sunrise.
This is the day when six armies conspire to halt their horses:
The Seventh Night of another year mocked the Herdboy Star.
What matter that for four decades he was Son of Heaven?
He is less than Lu who married Never Grieve.
An empty rumour, that second world beyond the seas. Other lives we cannot divine, this life is finished. In vain she hears the Tiger Guards sound the evening rattle; Never again shall the Cock Man come to report the sunrise. This is the day when six armies conspire to halt their horses; The seventh night of another year mocks the Herdboy Star. Son of Heaven for four decades, what shall we call him now? Better to be born in the house of Lu and marry Never Grieve. Beyond the seas they say there is another earth. Is there only one life? Only this one exists. Will the tiger-guards be heard, beating their bamboo rods? Will they return—those watchers of the palace water-clocks? On the day when six regiments mutinied, their horses pawing the earth, Did the herd-boy smile at their seventh night vows? The Emperor who reigned for half a century Could not like the Lu boy have his darling Mo-tzu? Beyond the Stream we merely hear Another ninefold world may be. But ere that life can be divined, THIS life below away will flee. In loneness still he heard his guards Call down the watches of the night. Aye heard the red-capped watchmen, till The dial's arrow warned the light. Where on that 7th eve she smiled To see her Taurus to her drawn, To-day she wakes to find encamped Six armies joined to threat her morn. Oh! thou that reigned for fifty years, How is it thou could'st not attain The peace allotted humbler homes, And safe thy love with thee retain? Beyond the Stream we merely hear Another ninefold world may be. But ere that life can be divined, THIS life below away will flee.
