At eight stealing a mirror glance,
already she knew how to paint long eyebrows.
At ten off to roam the green,
lotus flowers made skirts for her.
At twelve learning to play the lute,
never would she put the silver pick down.
At fourteen she hid from her six relations,
knowing their thoughts, though not yet a bride.
At fifteen in the spring wind she cried,
under the swing, her face turned away.
