The East wind sighs, the fine rains come:
Beyond the pool of water-lilies, the noise of faint thunder.
A gold toad gnaws the lock. Open it, burn the incense.
A tiger of jade pulls the rope. Draw from the well and escape.
Chia's daughter peeped through the screen when Han the clerk was young,
The goddess of the river left her pillow for the great Prince of Wei.
Never let your heart open with the spring flowers:
One inch of love is an inch of ashes.

Draw from the well and escape. Chia's daughter peeped through the screen, but Han Shou was young. The goddess of the river left her pillow, but the Prince of Wei was gifted. Never let your heart blossom with the spring flowers; An inch of love's flame is an inch of ashes. The east wind comes in gusts, bringing soft drops of rain; Beyond the hibiscus pond there is faint thunder. The gold toad bites on the lock and the incense comes through; The jade tiger pulls at the rope and the water is drawn up from the well. The lady Chia spied through the screen on the charms of young secretary Han; The lady Mi left a pillow for the prince of Wei, But the human heart in spring cannot hope to vie with the flowers, For every surge of heart there is a pinch of ashes. A misty rain comes blowing with a wind from the east, And wheels faintly thunder beyond Hibiscus Pool. ... Round the golden-toad lock, incense is creeping; The jade tiger tells, on its cord, of water being drawn.... A great lady once, from behind a screen, favoured a poor youth; A fairy queen brought a bridal mat once for the ease of a prince and then vanished. ... Must human hearts blossom in spring, like all other flowers? And of even this bright flame of love, shall there be only ashes? A rustling eastern wind comes with a drizzling rain. Beyond Hibiscus Pond rolling wheels faintly thunder. Incense can drift through golden toad on lock and chain, The tiger winch of jade can draw up water under. Lady Jia peeped at a handsome youth from her bower; Princess Mi left in vain her cushion to Prince of fame. My desire cannot bloom and vie with the spring flower, For inch by inch my heart is consumed by the flame. |

宓妃は枕をとどめて魏王に贈った
だがいたずらに恋の情を
花ときそって咲かせるでない
