Coming was an empty promise, you have gone, and left no footprint:
The moonlight slants above the roof, already the fifth watch sounds.
Dreams of remote partings, cries which cannot summon,
Hurrying to finish the letter, ink which will not thicken.
The light of the candle half encloses kingfishers threaded with gold,
The smell of musk comes faintly through embroidered water-lilies.
Young Liu complained that Fairy Hill is far.
Past Fairy Hill, range above range, ten thousand mountains rise.
WHEN you said you were coming it was but empty words; Now that you have gone you have left no trace. The moon shines aslant the roofs at the fifth watch; I dream that you have gone away for good; I cry out, but it is impossible to call you back. I try to write to you, but such is my haste that the ink is not properly mixed. On the top part of the cage the light of the wax lanterns reflects the gold kingfisher feathers. The musk perfume floats faintly through the embroidered hibiscus $((curtains))$. Liu was sorry that Paradise was so far away, But I am still more troubled for I am much further away than he. Coming is an empty word, going leaves no trace: The moon hangs aslant over the roofbeams—oh, the evening bells. A dream has difficult names for a long departure: The letters are hurried though the ink is not black enough. Candles shine over a half-niche of gold emeralds, And embalmed incense steals over the embroidered rose. The love-lorn knight hates the long journeys of fairyland, Yet how much farther away with each step he goes. You said you would come, but you did not, and you left me with no other trace Than the moonlight on your tower at the fifth-watch bell. I cry for you forever gone, I cannot waken yet, I try to read your hurried note, I find the ink too pale. ... Blue burns your candle in its kingfisher-feather lantern And a sweet breath steals from your hibiscus-broidered curtain. But far beyond my reach is the Enchanted Mountain, And you are on the other side, ten thousand peaks away. You said you'd come but you are gone and left no trace, I wake to hear in moonlit tower the fifth watch bell. In dream my cry couldn't call you back from distant place; In haste with ink unthickened I cannot write well. The candlelight illumines half our broidered bed; The smell of musk still faintly sweetens lotus-screen. Beyond my reach the far-off fairy mountains spread, But you're still farther off than fairy mountains green. |
