Passion too deep seems like none.
While we drink, nothing shows but the smile which will not come.
The wax candles feel, suffer at partings:
Their tears drip for us till the sky brightens.
Passion so deep appears as none: Before these farewell cups, unable even to smile. The candle too takes pity on our parting, 00 Shedding tears until the coming of the dawn. Old love would seem as though not love today; Spell-bound by thee, my laughter dies away. The $(very)$ wax sheds sympathetic tears And gutters $(sadly)$ down till dawn appears. She has so much passion, yet (to-night) it would seem as if she had none. Although we are drinking for the last time she fails to force a smile. But the wax candles seem to understand and sorrow at our parting; They deputize for us and they weep till early dawn. Love assumes the coolness of unlove, But at a farewell feast our smiles fail. Even the wax candle feels our sorrow, And at night sheds tears in honour of our separation. How can a deep love seem deep love, How can it smile, at a farewell feast? Even the candle, feeling our sadness, Weeps, as we do, all night long. Though deep in love, we seem not in love in the least, Only feeling we cannot smile at farewell feast. The candle has a wick just as we have a heart, All night long it sheds tears for us before we part. Great passion seems like no passion at all, We only feel, over the cups, that we cannot smile. The candle has a heart, it pities our separation. For our sake it sheds tears until the sky is light. |

あまりに感じ易く傷つき易い心というものは、かえって感受性のにぶいまったくの薄情な心に似てしまうものだ。わたしは今、別宴の酒だるの前であなたへの深い思いを示そうとして笑顔を作ろうにも作り得ない自分であることを感ずるばかり。
二人を照らすろうそくだけが、感情を持っていて、かえって別離を惜しんでいるかのように、わたしに代わって、しきりに涙のような、ろうのしずくを、夜明けまでしたたらせているのだ。
