OVER the water lies mist, over the sand the moon;
We were anchored at night on the Ch'in-huai near a tavern.
The inn-keeper's dancing girl mourns not the loss of country;
$Strange,$ but across the stream she still sings the Hout'ing-hua!
THE mists cover the cold waters of the river, but moonlight is on the sands When I anchor at Ch‘in Huai at night near the wine-shop. The women whom the merchants patronizes do not know the bitterness of a lost country, For there still steals across the river the song of the Hou Ting Fa. Smoke-veiled chill waters, moon veiling the sands, We anchored at Chien-wei river hard by some wineshops. The dancing-girls did not know the bitterness of our defeats. They were singing "The Flower in the Garden" on the further bank. Mist veils the cold stream, and moonlight the sand, As I moor in the shadow of a river-tavern, Where girls, with no thought of a perished kingdom, Gaily echo A Song of Courtyard Flowers. The mist the river veils, the moon shines on the sand, We're moored tonight in Ch'in-hwai where the wineshops stand. The song-girls here know not of kingdoms' dying pains, So drifting o'er the stream come Hou-t'ing-hua's sad strains. The mist half hides the water chill. The moon-lit sand gleam'd dim. At night we anchored on the Huai beside a hostel trim. The singing girls know nothing of a fallen nation's shame. Their lay of "Love amdist the Flowers" across the river came. Mist envelops the chilly water, the moon envelops the sand; Overnight I moor the boat by a winehouse on the Qinhuai River. The merchant girl doesn’t know what it means, regretting the loss of a kingdom, But over the river they’re still singing about it – the song ‘Rear palace flowers’. |
