The Ch'in emperor guarded the land against Tartar foes;
His vigilance, though, proved doubly grievous.
If only a single man were virtuous,
All within the four seas could have been one family.
The universe survives the affairs long past;
The ruined foundation lies hidden by brushwood.
Till now the bones of corvee laborers
Still weep in the wind and sandstorm.
