On the drying paths I walk in my thin shoes;
In the first cold I have donned my quilted coat.
Through shallow ditches the foods are clearing away;
Through sparse bamboos trickles a slanting light.
In the early dusk, down an alley of green moss,
The garden-boy is leading the cranes home.

西風が吹き出してから数日しかたたないのに 初（はつ）の木の葉がもう中ぞらから落ちてきた。余りすがすがしい日和に軽い履物（はきもの）が履いてみたくなり、ひやりと感ずる涼しさが私に衣更（ころもが）えを強いる。浅い溝に遣（や）り水が痩せてちょろちょろ流れ、竹のまばらの群立ちを斜に漏れる夕日差し。このたそがれ時に、敷きつめた青苔（あおごけ）のうえの小道を 若い園守（そのもり）が鶴を連れて帰ってくる。
