THERE can be no tears
Far a secret farewell;
There can be no converse
For a hidden love.
Besides our two hearts no man can know it;
Locked deep in its cage by night the lonely bird rests.
The keen sword in Spring sunders the twining branches;
The water of the river, though muddy, may yet become clear;
The head of the crow, though black, may yet become
white.
But for a secret farewell and for hidden love,
The two must be content to hope for naught to come.
