Beside the river stands the hundred-foot tower,
There a highway runs a thousand miles into the distance.
Looking at the far horizon from this height
Suffices to comfort my mind and heart.
Couriers bustle along the road,
Soldiers hurry to their garrisons.
In such troubled times
Especially I feel it good to be idle:
Now that I am past forty,
It is really not too early to retire.
Let me now clean my dust-stained garments.
It will not be too late to return to the hills.
