AT daybreak my servant went to market
With a basket to buy spring vegetables.
He purchased turtle foot and green celery,
Beneath which lay two white fish;
Silent, but with open mouths,
They were moistened by their breath alone.
When thrown from the basket to the ground,
They darted out and measured more than a foot.
They could fall a prey not only to the knife,
But also to the ants and gnats.
Though out of water for a long while,
They would soon revive if put back in their element.
They were placed in a little pond.
To offer them some relief,
As it was narrow and there was little water,
The fishes' tails could not move Without touching the four corners.
So they were saved for a time.
But how could they survive for long?
Pitying them for their helplessness,
I moved them to the South Lake;
This lake is joined with the West River.
"Set out at once, but proceed with care.
to demand payment for each favour.
I am not one
Down at the bottom in the mud and sand."
You don't have to look hard for pearls for me
