LINED curtains of red sendal,
Gold-tufted tassels,
Nine-branched candelabra,
Hanging carp.
This lovely girl, by the shining moon,
Opens her ringed door,
Pours out wine in a spring flood
From a gibbon jar.
Her price is high: ten incense-sticks
In costly caskets,
Ingots of red-melon gold
And bran-cake flakes,
A green jade duck in wrappings
Of five-coloured silk—
Over such costly presents
A-hou laughs with delight.
The Milky Way wheels past southern caves,
Screen shadows fade.
In the kolanut woods, crows are crying,
Nestling their young.
Hill-hatted sword, sectioned whip,
Green stones and pearls,
His piebald horse is flecked with foam,
Frost stiffening its coat.
She speeds her guest to Ch'eng-ming lodge,
At dawn by the water-clock.
Then back to her tall mansion.
And a bright, lonely moon.
Another guest is just dismounting
As the first one leaves,
Once more she combs her 'green cicadas',
Brushes on her brows.
