The sky glows one side black, three sides purple.
The Yellow River's ice closes, fish and dragons die.
Bark three inches thick cracks across the grain,
Carts a hundred piculs heavy mount the river's water.
Flowers of frost on the grass are as big as coins,
Brandished swords will not pierce the foggy sky,
Crashing ice flies in the swirling seas,
And cascades hang noiseless in the mountains, rainbows of jade.
The blackness of one quarter lights up the mauve of three: the Yellow River in a weld of ice, its fish and dragons die. Bark of the tree-foot trees splits into scar and crackle; carts, strong beneath a hundred-weight, ascend the river's flow. Blossoms off frost upon the grass, huge as copper coins; brandished swords could not pierce these meshed and low-slung skies. Ocean's wrest and tumble grows loud with hurtling ice; mountain cascades are voiceless, dependent rainbows of jade. ONE quarter lowers black while three turn purple, Ice vaults the Yellow River, fish and dragons die. Tree-bark three feet thick splits into patterns, Chariots of a ton or more travel on the flood. Frost-flowers on the grass, big as silver pieces, No brandished blade could penetrate this sombre sky. Whirling in a raging sea the flying ice-floes roar, Soundless bang mountain waterfalls, rainbows of jade. The sky glows one side black, three sides purple. The Yellow River's ice closes, fish and dragons die. Bark three inches thick cracks across the grain; Carts a hundred piculs heavy mount the River's waters. Flowers of frost on the grass are as big as coins, Brandished swords will not pierce the foggy sky, Flying ice-flakes crash in the swirling seas, And cascades hang noiseless in the mountains, rainbows of jade. |
