The Southern hills, how mournful!
A ghostly rain sprinkles the empty grass.
In Ch'ang-an, on an autumn midnight,
How many men grow old before the wind?
Dim, dim, the path in the twilight,
Branches curl on the black oaks by the road.
The trees cast upright shadows and the moon at the zenith
Covers the hills with a white dawn.
Darkened torches welcome a new kinsman:
In the most secret tomb these fireflies swarm.
THE melancholy of the Southern Mountain, Where ghostly rain falls spattering on dead grass! Back in Ch'ang-an, this autumn midnight, How many men have withered in this wind? I lost my way on these paths in the yellow twilight, Blue chestnut-oaks are tossing by the road. Moon at her height, tree-shadows dwindled away, The entire mountain bathed in a white dawn.' Lacquer torches are out to welcome newcomers, As fireflies dance over these lonely tombs. Woe to the South Mountain! The rain mist showers on the dead grasses. In this midnight in the Capital How many will turn old in the wind! I am lost in the evening pathways Winding dimly among dim oakgroves. The moon at the Pole drives away the vast shadows of the forest, And the mountain glares in a grey-white dawn. The green torches jump to welcome new ghosts: The gleam of fire-flies sparkles among the new-dug graves. |

ああ、南山は、どうしてこんなにも悲しげなのであろうか。死人のうめき声を思わせる不気味な冷たい雨が、花も人気も失われた、荒れた草むらに降りそそいでいる。都長安は今、万物が凋落する秋の真夜中。
冷たい風に吹かれて、いったい幾人$の失意の人$が、老い衰えて命の燭を吹き消されるのであろうか。
$南山の墓地に向かって死者たちの運ばれゆく通路は$、ほの暗くて物の姿も定かでない小道。風にあおられて、しきりにざわめく青い櫟の並木道。 $いつしか死人の雨もあがり$、月が中天$天心$にかかるとともに、樹々の影はすっくと立ちあがって消えうせ、全山はまるで夜明けを迎えたかのような、青白い光に包まれている。漆のように黒く暗いたいまつがともって、新しい亡者たちを出迎え、$散在する$奥深い墓定のそばには、青白く明滅する螢が、うじゃうじゃと飛びかっている$まるで無数の亡霊たちが、「あなたもついに来たのね」と歓喜しているかのように$。
