LONG songs have torn the collar of my robe,
Short songs have cropped my whitening hair.
The king of Ch'in is nowhere to be seen,
So dawn and dusk a burning fever racks me.
I drink wine from a pitcher when I'm thirsty,
Cull ears of rice from the dike-top when I'm hungry.
Lonely and sad, I see May pass me by,
And suddenly a thousand leagues grow green.
So high those nighted peaks soar into the air,
The bright moon sinks to the very foot of the crags.
I wander about, searching along the rocks,
But the moon shines out beyond those towering crags.
Because I cannot roam round with the moon,
My hair's grown white before I end my song.
Long songs wore out my garments, Short songs broke my white hair. The Emperor does not allow himself to be seen: Internal fevers shake my body morning and evening. Thirsty, I drink wine. Hungry, I take corn. This melancholy-cool April will soon end, And then there will be a thousand miles of green. Look, how each mountain peak at night stands alone. The moonlight falls on each rounded stone. Lingering, I search among them. The moon shines above the high battlements. I cannot wander about when the moon is there: The song over, my hairs have changed colour. |
