I LEFT my village with a sword
Whose edge of jade could cut a cloud in two.
Among the youthful horsemen of Hsiang-yang,
My spirits were as fresh as spring itself.
At dawn I grieved the sword’s fair blade was clean,
At dawn I grieved the sword’s bright gleam was cold.
Gripping it firm, I go to kill my man;
A sword is not conducive to reflection.
