The south wind's gust against the hill will make it flat land,
By God's appointment T'ien Wu shifts the waters of the sea.
When the Queen Mother's peach blossoms turn red the thousandth time
Grandfather P'eng and Wizard Hsien will have died how many deaths?
By the dark hairs of the piebald horse the dapple's edge meanders,
Graceful spring's willows are closed in yellow mist.
The lute-girl coaxes me with the gold-handled cup.
Before my blood and spirit fused, who was I?
No sense in wildly drinking, Governor Ting!
The time's best men don't stick to one master.
When I buy silk I shall have them embroider the Lord of P'ing-yüan,
When I have wine I shall pour libations only on the soil of Chao.
The clock drips fast and the water chokes the jade frog:
The girl of Wei's tresses thin, she will not risk the comb.
See how autumn eyebrows have changed to new green.
Why all that thrusting and shoving when we were twenty?
THE south wind blows upon the mountains, Levelling them flat. God sends T'ien Wu to sweep away The waters of the sea. As the Queen Mother's peach-blossoms redden again The thousandth time, How often have Grandfather P'eng and Wizard Hsien Come to their deaths? The blue-black hair of my piebald horse Dappled with coins, Willows of the graceful spring Wreathed in light mist. A girl with a zither coaxing me To a golden goblet, Before blood and spirit had yet congealed, Who then was I? No point in drinking ocean-deep, Governor Ting! The finest men in this age of ours Will own no master. Let us buy silk to embroider the image Of the Lord of P'ing-yüan. And then pour out a libation of wine On the soil of Chao. Hurrying drops of the water-clock Choke the jade toad, The Wei girl's tresses grow so thin She cannot bear the comb. Autumn eyebrows in an instant Replace our fresh green! Why must lads of twenty Fawn and scramble for office? The southwind blows the mountains: the mountains become plains. The King of the gods sends his servant to sweep up the sea. When the peach-blossoms of the fairy-queen have reddened a thousand times How many deaths have the long-lived men died? The blue manes of the piebald horses are mottled with coins. Willows this sweet spring wave among whirling vapours. The flute-player persuades me to drink wine from the gold beaker. Unless I calm my blood and soul, how shall I live? I say to the general: it is not necessary to drink too much; For naturally the hero cannot find his master in this world. Buy silk to embroider the clothes of Pin-yuan-chuan. All the wine we have, we can only sprinkle it on his earth. From the mouth of the Jade Toad the water-clock hurries time. The hair of the young dancer is too frail for the comb. I see the brow of autumn changing into the freshest green: Why should the young man of twenty be always a slave? |
