The old hare and the chilled frog weep the sky's sheen,
Through a door ajar in a mansion of cloud the rays slant white on the wall.
The white-jade wheel shivers the dew into wet globes of light;
Chariot bells meet girdle pendants on cassia-scented paths.
Yellow dust and clear water beneath the Fairy Mountains
Change places once in a thousand years which pass like galloping horses.
When you peer at far-off China, nine puffs of smoke:
And the single pool of the ocean has drained into a cup.
THE ancient hare, the shivering toad, Weep sky-blue tears, The cloud-towers are half-revealed. Walls slant and white. Jade wheel creaks upon the dew, Wet globes of light, Simurgh-bells and girdle-gems meeting On cassia-scented roads. Now yellow dust, now clear water, Below the Three Hills. Sudden the changes of a thousand years As a galloping horse. From far above, the Middle Kingdom Is just nine wisps of cloud. All the clear waters of the sea A spilt cup. The old Rabbit, the cold Toad weep heaven's dimness. Doorways of cloud mansions open, walls slanting white. The jade wheel's round glow revolves in the wet dew. Phoenix pendants, jangle on the fragrant cassia paths. Below the Three Mountains, earth and 0 water exchange shape, a thousand years sweep past like galloping steeds. Down below, the continents seem nine wisps of smoke, And wide expanses of ocean the contents of a single cup. |
