The old peasant lives in an impoverished mountain home,
Cultivating three mu or so of mountain land.
When yields are low and taxes high his food is scarce;
The grain he pays in taxes turns to dirt in public store.
At year's end, leaning his plough and hoe against the empty house,
He tells his children to go gather acorns in the hills.
In West River, the merchants have pearls aplenty;
The dogs aboard their boats are always given meat.
