In utter silence the fires burn upon the plain:
The falcon-fearing pheasant has taken cover again.
As the field is slowly narrowed, onlookers press close.
So that his prowess might move all,
The general stays his mount and draws his bow, holding back his shot.
The pheasant startles, but the sturdy arrow strikes it.
Up it soars, high above the watchers 000,
Till its red plumage, and the white of the arrow shaft, arc downward.
Congratulated by his officers, the general throws back his head and laughs.
A tumult of multi-colored feathers falls before his steed.
