MOUNTAIN gullies and ravines lead to a thatched cottage,
Misty clouds rise before the doorway curtained by creepers,
The bamboos are admirable when fresh with rain.
In the hills we love the time of sunset,
The idle egret comes home early to roost,
The autumn flowers fall later than they should.
My servant boy sweeps the grassy path,
For yesterday I made arrangements for the visit of an old friend.
At a little grass-hut in the valley of the river, Where a cloud seems born from a viney wall, You will love the bamboos new with rain, And mountains tender in the sunset. Cranes drift early here to rest And autumn flowers are slow to fade.... I have bidden my pupil to sweep the grassy path For the coming of my friend. Around my thatched cottage wild brooks wind; To my rough curtain rosy clouds their way oft find. With rain just o'er, bamboos refresh the eye, And mountains in the setting sun more charming lie. Idle storks to roost go early in the eve; And autumn flowers are slower to take their leave. The boy is sweeping my o'ergrown paths clean Against an old friend I've invited to the scene. |

家僮に蘿の径を掃かせ
きのう約した友の来たるを待つ
