I have heard the affairs in Ch'ang-an are like a game of chess; For a hundred years, the business of the state has caused sorrows un-bearable. $(Over there,)$ the mansions of great nobles and prices all have new owners, $(And)$ the court dresses of officials and generals have changed from former times. Straight north, on the mountain pass, gongs and drums shake the earth; To horses and chariots in the westward expedition, war dispatches race. $(Here,)$ the fish-dragon is solitary and the autumn stream cold— To live peacefully in the old country is all I cherish.
Well said Ch'ang-an looks like a chess-board: A hundred years of the saddest news. The mansions of princes and nobles all have new lords: Another breed is capped and robed for office. Due north on the mountain passes the gongs and drums shake, To the chariots and horses campaigning in the west the winged dispatches hasten. While the fish and the dragons fall asleep and the autumn river turns cold My native country, untroubled times, are always in my thoughts.
Well said, Ch’ang-an looks like a chessboard– Won and lost for a hundred years, sad beyond all telling. The mansions of princes and nobles all have new lords, And another generation wears the caps and robes of office. Due north on the mountain passes the gongs and drums shake, To the chariots and horses campaigning in the west the winged dispatches hasten. While the fish and dragons fall asleep and the autumn river turns cold My native country, untroubled times, are always in my thoughts.
Ch'ang-an is like a chessboard—so I hear people say. Too sad for utterance the things these recent years display! New owners lord it in the Halls where Dukes and Princes dwelt; Nor in the good old honest way are ranks and titles dealt. Along the northern frontier the gong and drum vibrate. To fight the gypsies on the West commands arrive too late. Like me, the fish and serpents in Autumn's stream are chill. Sad thoughts of far-off happy times my lonely bosom fill.

I hear that Chang-an is like a game of chess, Events occurred within the century are a mess. The nobles' halls are rendered to new lords' hold, High officials with vests are different from old. The gongs and drums at northern passes sound the hest, The dispatch-riders hurry the chariots to the west. Yet here in autumn waters fish and dragons are lorn, Thinking of the Capital where I've lived I groan.
