A thousand houses rimmed by the mountains are quiet in the morning light,
Day after day in the house by the river I sit in the blue of the hills.
Two nights gone the fisher-boats once more come bobbing on the waves,
Belated swallows in cooling autumn still flit to and fro.

As promoter of learning, a Liu Hsiang who failed.
Of the school-friends of my childhood, most did well.
By the Five Tombs in light cloaks they ride their sleek horses.
The thousand houses, the circling mountains, are quiet in the morning light; Day by day in the house by the river I sit in the blue of the hills. Two nights gone the fisher boats once more come bobbing on the waves, Belated swallows in cooling autumn still flutter to and fro. K’uang Heng writing state papers, which earned me no credit, Liu Hsiang editing classics, my hopes elsewhere… Yet many of my school friends have risen in the world. By the Five Tombs in light cloaks they ride their sleek horses. Kweichow is but a little town of scarce a thousand homes; And noiseless still the morning light about its precincts roams. The Tower beside the River my daily visit sees; And there I sit, half up the hill, amid the wooded leas. The fisher folk that sleep thereby, and never go away, Are ever drifting to and fro amid the currents' play. 'Tis Autumn clear; and yet around the prating swallows fly, $(As though, like me, forgotten here, and left to pine and die.)$ Kwang Heng in happy terms explained Strange Nature's seeming spite. But ah! my reputation's breath is lost in lonely night. Liu Hsiang expounded classic lore; and won reward and gain. But aye, at warfare with my heart, in exile I remain. Of those young men who studied with me, whom I surpassed, Are many who have honor won, $(and left me halting last.)$ They dwell amid yon stately Halls, fair robed, with prancing steeds; While I to solitude am left, devoted to my needs. Like Kuang Heng, I've said something to the King, yet woe is me, Liu Xiang was learned in Classics, and I can't be. And my young schoolmates they all have fortune on their sides; In light furs, on fat steeds, through the Five Tombs they ride. |

千軒ばかりの山の町は朝日の光もしずかだ。わたしは毎日毎日長江にのぞむ高樓に登って山ふところと向きあって坐る。もう二晩も三晩も、とまりこんでいる漁師たちは、相變わらず小舟を漕ぎ出して浪間にただよわせている。すがすがしい秋になったのに、つばめはまだスーイ、スーイと飛んでいる。
むかし僕の匡衡は意見書を天子にたてまつって、とうとう丞相にまで昇進したというが、自分はそれとは大ちがいで、意見書をたてまつって放逐されてしまい、何の功績にもならなかった。むかし漢の劉向ば勅命を奉じて古い經典を校訂考證し、それを子どもの劉歆に傳えて編纂事業を完成させた。わたしは學間の家に生まれ、同じ儒學を修めたとはいえ、ごらんのとおり、放浪の身の上に、かてて加えて愛兒は愚鈍不肖 の子供で、とても經學を子孫に傳えることはできそうもない。
むかし少年時代に筆硯をともにして勉強した仲間は、たいていは立身榮達している。軽い裘をきて肥えた馬にまたがり、五陵あたりを横行しているありさまが目に見えるようだ。
