I wanted my picture to hang
in the hall of fame, the Unicorn Gallery
now in old age
I waddle with the ducks and snowy herons
in autumn the big rivers rise suddenly
at night I hear
the waters roaring
in the deserted gorges
stones pile up to block the paths
the sail that might have carried me back
turns into a cloud
and my children grow up speaking
a barbarous tongue
as if they were only fit
for careers in the army.
My ambition, to be pictured in Unicorn Hall: But my years decline where the ducks and herons troop. On the great river autumn is soon in spate, In the empty gorge the night is full of noises. The by-paths hide in a thousand piling stones: The sail has come to a stop, one streak of cloud. My children too have learned a barbarous tongue, Though it's not so sure they will rise to high command. |
