Music and ceremony to correct my faults
mountains and forests to addle me with joy
I nod till my silk cap
starts to slide off
the sun that warms my back
brightens my bamboo book
when the fall wind knocks down pinecones
I gather them
when the weather turns cold
I open the hives to collect the honey
a few last flowers here and there
I stop to inhale their fragrance.
Music and rites to conquer my failings, Mountains and woods to prolong my zest. On my twitching head the silk cap slants, I sun my back in the shine of bamboo books, Pick up the pine cones dropped by the wind, Split open the hive when the sky is cold By scattered and tiny red and blue Halt pattened feet close to the faint perfume. Deficient in the polite studies, My love for hills and woods enduring, I nod my cap half off my head, Back bare to sunlight through bamboo. And gather wind-dropped pinecones up, And bring in beehives during winter, And where dispersed red-and-green Emit a sensuous sweetness linger. |
