Twilight comes down the mountain to
The villa next the dyke. By caves
On high the light clouds pitch their tents.
The moon turns over in the waves.
In silence left by flight of cranes
The wolves at feast howl while the fears
Of wartime prevent sleep from men
Powerless to adjust the spheres.
Darkness still shadows the mountain road $(As I gaze from)$ $(my)$ study above the water gate. Streamers of cloud seem to rest upon the brow of a cliff, $(While)$ the lonely moon tumbles among the waves. $(A line of)$ cranes winds overhead in silent flight. $(Below)$, $(a pack of)$ wolves quarrels over food. I am grieved by the war and have not slept. Who has the strength to right heaven and earth? While the evening here is approaching the mountain paths, I come to this high-up chamber, very close to the Water Gate. Thin clouds rest on the edges of cliffs; A lonely moon turns among the waves. A line of cranes in flight is silent; A pack of wolves baying over their prey breaks the quiet. I cannot sleep because I am concerned about wars, Because I am powerless to amend the world. |
