清流がぐるりと村を抱きかかえるようにして流れている。夏の日長、この川辺の村は、ひっそりとしずまりかえっている。
軒端に巣をかけた燕は飛び去ったかと思うと飛び来たり、川面にたわむれている鷗は人の姿を見ると親しげに近寄ってくる。
老妻は紙に線を引いて碁盤をつくり、幼い子供らは針をたたいて釣針をつくっている。
病気がちのこの身に必要なのは薬だけ。つまらぬこの身に、これ以上何を望むことがあろうか。
