WAHERE is the temple of the Prime Minister?
On the outskirts of Chin-kuan, lined with cedars,
Green grass on the steps still grows freshly,
And golden orioles sing from thee nearby branches.
Thrice his lord had called on him, to ponder On grave affairs of state with him.
It was he who helped to found the dynasty And served loyalty during two reigns.
Alas, he passed away before he could conquer!
This will forever draw copious tears from heroes.
Where can I find the temple of Prime Minister Chu-ko Liang? I find it among somber cedars outside the City of the Brocade Officier. Green grass between stone steps expresses only its own spring color; Hidden orioles among the leaves are wasting their pretty songs. Three visits of the good prince were all concerned with saving the world; Two reigns allowed the great minister to unfold his fine states- manship. That he should die before his last expedition was crowned with victory Has brought tears to the eyes of great men of succeeding genera- tions Where would I find the Prime Minister's shrine? Somewhere outside Jinguan, in a dense cypress glade Where the grass covered steps don the color of spring And the orioles' fine songs go unheard. Requested three times to guide the nation, He served two monarchs with utter devotion, And died before he saw the triumph of his troops. For him, generations of heroes shed tears. Where is the temple to the Prime Minister of Shu? There, in the shade of cypresses outside the city. Stone steps tinged with the green of fresh spring grass. Orioles singing in the foliage—all to no avail. Thrice visited , he was asked to estimate the situation And present his plans for bringing peace to the nation, Serving father and son, he did prove his loyalty In helping to create and consolidate the kingdom. Alas! Death befell ere victory was achieved, Which makes heroes shed tears of deep regret. |

丞相諸葛孔明の同堂はどこへたずねて ゆけばよいか。成都の郊外、柏樹のうっそうと茂っているとごろがそれだ。
来てみると、古びた階段にひときわ鮮やかな緑草は、時代の移ろいとはかかわりなく春の趣きをたたえ、若葉の向こうの黄鳥は、聞く人が無くてもよい鳴き声でさえずっている$さびしい境内で無情の自然に触れ、いよいよ孔明をしのぶ気持が高まる$。
思えばその昔、蜀の劉備が孔明の草庵を三たびも訪れたのは、ひとえに天下平定の大計のためであり、孔明が劉備・劉禅の二代に仕えて建国の基を開き守成の業を全うさせようと努めたのは、まったく蜀の老臣としてのまごころから出たものであった。
だが宿敵魏を伐つために出陣して未だ勝利を収めぬうちに孔明は病歿し、永く後世のますらおたちに無念の涙を流させているのである。
