Parted by death, we swallow remorse;
Apart in life, we always suffer.
South of the river, miasmal place,
From the banished exile, not a word!
Old friend, you appeared in a dream,
It shows you have long been in my thoughts.
Perhaps it wasn't your living soul:
The way's too far, it couldn't be done.
Your spirit came: and the maples were green:
Your spirit left: the mountain pass darkened.
Friend, now that you're ensnared down there,
How did you manage to wing away?
Moonlight shines full on the rafters,
Yet I wonder if it isn't your reflection.
The waters are deep, the waves expansive:
Don't let the water-dragon get you!
THE partings caused by death are swallowed in silence, But those among the living are a source of never-ending grief. Alas! From the malarial swamps south of Chiang-nan The exile sends no news. Ah! my old friend, how I dream of you. Clearly our long friendship is reflected in my mind, Yet I fear lest your spirit should be among the ghosts. Immeasurable is the distance that divides us, Yet as your shade comes to me the maples turn green And as it goes the mountain pass turns black, But to-day you are (caught) in the $((political))$ net And the spirit is not your earthly shape, for are you not incalculably far away? The setting moon strikes the rafters of my home And it still seems to light up your face. The water is deep and the waves are wide; Do not allow the scaly dragon to get you. To be parted from one deceased is unbearable Till mourning comes to an end, To be parted from one living is unbearable Till life comes to an end. No word from the exile in the deadly swamps of the south, Only in dream do I see you--I, never iorgetting. Perhaps it's not your living spirit, No way of knowing, you're so far away. When your spirit comes, I see the maples green; When your spirit is gone, I see these mountains sombre. But how could you have come when you’re not free? The setting moon lights up the beams, And I seem to see your face. Beware, my friend, deep in the billowing waters The dragons are lurking! There are sobs when death is the cause of parting; But life has its partings again and again. ... From the poisonous damps of the southern river You had sent me not one sign from your exile— Till you came to me $(last night)$ in a dream, Because I am always thinking of you.... I wondered if it were really you, Venturing so long a journey. You came to me through the green of a forest, You disappeared by a shadowy fortress ... Yet out of the midmost mesh of your snare, How could you lift your wings and use them? ... I woke, and the low moon's glimmer on a rafter Seemed to be your face, still floating in the air. ... There were waters to cross, they were wild and tossing; If you fell, there were dragons and river-monsters. When death bid us sever, we swallowed our woe. When parting in life, oh! how anxious were we. Those Kiang-nan fevers so dreaded we know. No tidings have come since we parted from thee. The spirit departed comes into my dream— Thus showing that ever I ponder on him— That no common kind was his soul it would seem, So distant it flies that the track is too dim. The maple woods gloom when his soul cometh by. The passes turn black as his soul flies away. Ah! friend, in the nets you are taken: how fly? And whence are the wings that upbear you to-day? The Moon sinking down fills the room with her light, As if it reflected your countenance bright. Lo! deep is the water, and wide is the wave: And how shall the Dragon be found in his grave? When death bid us sever, we swallowed our woe. When parting in life, oh! how anxious were we. Those Kiang-nan fevers so dreaded we know. No tidings have come since we parted from thee. The Moon sinking down fills the room with her light, As if it reflected your countenance bright. Lo! deep is the water, and wide is the wave: And how shall the Dragon be found in his grave? We sob when death comes rending us apart, And parting alive, too, would wrench our heart. Yon Jiangnan is known as the malarious mire. No news of you yet comes from the exile. Knowing how much I think of you always, Into my dreams, so you did make your ways. But I'm afraid it is not your soul old, Since it's a long way and nothing can be told. As your soul nears, the maple trees turn blue; And the frontier is darkened when back you go. You are now in the meshes of law, How can you have wings and elude the paw? The setting moonlight is flooding over the beams; Your feature is still lighted up there, it seems. Deep are the waters, billows widely spread, Mind, and be sure the dragons wouldn't be fed!
