Building fortifications athwart the pass!
Bastions big and small, strong as cast iron,
High up in the mountains on either side.
I ask the officer in charge,
"Getting ready to resist the Tartars?"
He requests me to dismount and look around.
Pointing to a recess, he says,
"Look at the stockades, rising high into the clouds,
Impassable even to the birds.
When Tartars come, we just sit tight.
No need to worry about Chang' an.
See the natural advantage here, Sir.
It's so narrow, only small carts can file throughs
Not enough room even to use spears;
A single armed man can hold it against an army."
"Remember the disastrous defeat at this pass,
When numerous men, alas were driven into the river?
Better tell the general guarding this position
To be vigilant and cautious, and not let that happen again!"
