Flocks of chicken clucking from every corner,
They fight each other as visitors arrive.
After I have chased the chickens up the tree,
I could hear the knocks at the wicket gate.
Elders of the village, four or five,
Come to ask me about my long journey.
Each carrying something in his hand,
They pour out jugs of good and poor wine.
"Hope you won't mind if the wine tastes too weak:
No one has been able to attend to farming.
And since we're still in the midst of battles,
All our children have gone to the eastern front."
Then I ask to sing for the elders a song;
In these hard times, I'm deeply moved by their affection.
Singing done, I look up to the heavens and sigh,
And tears stream down the cheeks of all who sit around.
The cocks are crowing, fighting, When the guests arrive. I shoo the cocks up the trees, And then I hear the knocking at the wattle gate. Four or five village elders have come to bid me welcome, Upon my return after an absence so long. Each has brought something for me: Wooden vessels of wine and such. "Excuse us, please, for this thin wine. The millet fields have been lying fallow, As the war is still on And the boys are with the army out east." Let me sing a song for you, venerable elders. I thank you for your kindness in these hard times. I sing, I sigh, raising my eyes to heaven, And all are in tears. The cocks were screaming all at once, Fighting as the guests approached. Not till we had shooed them up the trees, Did we hear knocking at the gate. Patriarchs four or five had come To ask about my wanderings, Each with his gift to me of wine That varied in its quality. They apologised for its thinness by The want of men in the paddy fields, For since the war dragged on and on, Their boys were all at the eastern front… "May I sing for you old gentlemen Whose kindness shames my indigence?" My singing ended, eyeing the sky I sighed, and all at the table wept. |
