Third month, third day, in the air a breath of newness;
by Chang-an riverbanks the beautiful ladies crowd,
warm-bodied, modest-minded, mild and pure,
with clear sleek complexions, bone and flesh well matched,
in figured gauze robes that shine in the late spring,
worked with golden peacocks, silver unicorns.
On their heads what do they wear?
Kingfisher glinting from hairpins that dangle by sidelock borders.
On their backs what do I see?
Pearls that weight the waistband and subtly set off the form.
Among them, kin of the lady of cloud screens and pepper-scented halls,
granted titles to the great fiefs of Kuo and Chin.
Humps of purple camel proffered from blue caldrons,
platters of crystal spread with silvers of raw fish;
but ivory chopsticks, sated, dip down no more,
and phoenix knives in vain hasten to cut and serve.
Yellow Gate horses ride swiftly, leaving the dust unstairred,
bearing from royal kitchens unending rate delights.
Plaintive notes of flute and drum, enough to move the gods;
throngs of guest and lackeys, all of highest rank;
and last, another rider, with slow and measured stride,
dismount at the tent door, ascends the brocade carpet.
The snow of willow catkins blankets the white-flowered reeds;
a bluebird flies away, in its bill a crimson kerchief -
Where power is all-surpassing, fingers my be burned;
take care and draw no closer to His Excellency's glare!

There is a freshness in the air this Third of Third, a spring festival day. I see by the Meandering River of Ch'ang'an many fair women With distant looks but frequent smiles, sweet and real. With delicacy of com- plexion and symmetry of form, They appear in silken dresses em- broidered with golden peacocks Or silvery unicorns, dazzling in the sunshine of late spring. What do they wear on their heads? Kingfisher head-dresses with jade-leaves over the temples. What do you see on their backs? Pearl-trimmed capes cut perfectly to fit. You can spot the Imperial relatives among those rainbow screens-Among them the Lady of Kuo and the Lady of Ch-in. The purple steak of dromedary hump, broiled in a shining pan, The white meat of raw fish served on crystal plates, Are not inviting enough to the satiated palate. All that is cut with fancy and prepared with care is left untouched. Palace messengers come on light steeds, galloping without dust, Continuously bringing the rarest delicacies from His Majesty's kitchens. Strings and pips now accom- pany the feasting with music, weird enough To move ghosts-not to mention the hoard of guests and retainers, each of commanding impor- tance. You see the last comer, who approaches leisurely on his horse, Dismounts nears the screens, and steps on the flowery carpet. Willow catkins drop like snow to confuse the white frobit; A blue bird flies away with a pink kerchief in its beak. The Prime Minister is so power- ful, his mere touch will scorch. Approach not, lest you anger him. On the third day of the third month, in fresh weather, The elegant women of the capital stroll on the riverbank— Their manner regal and remote, their faces delicate, Their figures shapely and pleasing. Wrapped in filmy silks bright with peacocks and silver unicorns, They illumine the spring evening. What do they wear in their hair? The kingfisher headdress with jade leaves dangling Past their lips. What do you see upon their shoulders? Capes with crushed pearls at their waists that cling To their bodies. One even glimpses from time to time, Glittering beneath the canopies of the empresses' pavilion, Those great ladies of the empire, Kuo and Ch'in. Purple steak from the camel's hump broiled in a glistening pan And the white flesh of fish are set out in rows of crystal dishes. But the satiated ones stay their rhinoceros chopsticks, And morsels minced by belled knives lie untouched. Yet still the palace eunuchs arrive. They rein in their horses without so much as stirring dust, And set before the guests food rare as jewels Brought from the eight corners of the earth. The music of pipes and drums, strange enough to move the dead, Accompanies the feast. A vast retinue blocks the main road. Then in measured paces a saddled horse arrives; The rider dismounts and enters on embroidered carpets. Willow-down drifts like snow, masking white duckweek flowers; And a bluebird flies off with a scarlet kerchief in his beak. Be careful! So great is his power, his lightest touch can burn. Do not approach the prime minister too close. He may be angry. It's the third day of the third moon and the weather is fine. On this feast day the riverside is crowded with beautiful ladies. Alluring yet remote, so provocative, so demure, All finely formed, finely textured, Dressed for this late spring outing in rich silks Embroidered with peacocks and unicorns in gold and silver. What do they wear on their heads? Flowers of jade with pendent leaves gracing their temples. What do they wear that gleams on their backs? Pearls on waistbands over nice-fitting skirts. Among these are the sisters of the Most Valued Imperial Concubine, Bearing grand titles conferred by the emperor. Behold! Camel humps cooked in magnificent cauldrons, Snow-white fish on crystal tray, Delicacies abundant await the satiate who merely toy with chopsticks of rhinoceros horn, While fancy carvers decked with tiny bells tinkle on, displaying their art in vain, While the eunuchs' horses fly back and forth, bringing more dishes from the imperial kitchen. Listen! Soul-stirring music of flutes and drums. And here come locks of high-ranking servitors. The last to arrive ambles up, dismounts at the pavilion, treading on carpets of gorgeous satin. Willow floss falls like snowflakes on the white clover fern, A blue bird, bearing a red handkerchief, soars into the sky. Blazing power that could singe, Beware! 三月三日上巳の節句、空はすっきりと澄みわたって、長安の曲江の水辺には、
多くの美女が遊んでいる。その姿態は濃艶で、その気品は奥ゆかしくてしとやかで、自然の美しさがあり、はだのきめはこまかくて、うるおいがあってなめらかで、骨肉の均斉がとれた姿である。刺補をした美しいうすぎぬの衣裳は、晩春の光の中で照り映えており、その衣袋の刺細は黄金のより糸でくじゃくの模械、銀の糸できりんの模様を施したもの。頭にいただくのは何かといえば、翡翠の宝石を水の薬の形にした髪飾りで、びんの毛のあたりに垂れさがっている。うしろ姿に見えるのは何かといえば、真珠が、スカートの帯にずっしりと重くつけられ、ほどよく身体に調和している。
中でも、雲のように長く張りめぐらしたまんまくの中の皇后楊貴妃の親戚は、大国の虢国と秦国の称号を賜っているその夫人たちこそ、めざましい。その前には赤くり毛のらくだのこぶが、みどりのかまから取り出され、水晶の大皿には、銀白色のうろこの魚が並べられる。しかし食べ飽きていて、犀の角のはしは、しばらくの間ごちそうにつけられることもなく、鈴のついた包丁は、肉などを糸のように細かく切りきざむが、それもむだにあわただしいばかり。そこに天子の使者後宮の宦官が、巧みに馬を走らせて土ぼこりも立てずにやってくると、それに続いて天子の台所から、つぎつぎと八種の珍味が送られてくる。
笛と太鼓は悲哀の音色で、鬼神をも感動させるようであり、お供の者たちは混雑して、要路の津ともいうべき、この楊氏の一門にあふれている。
そこにくらを置いた馬にまたがって後からやって来た人、それはなんと、ゆっくりと馬を進めることか。まんまくを張りめぐらしたきわで、馬から下りてもうせんの敷物の中に入って行く。柳の綿が雪のように舞い落ちて白い花の水草をおおい、恋の使者とされる青い鳥が飛んでいって、赤いスカーフを口にくわえているといたありさま。その権勢は並ぶものなく、手をかざせばやけどするであろうと思われるほど。つつしんで、近づき進まないほうがよい、丞相楊国忠ににらまれよう。
